Pin Awards

PWDCA Pin Awards Program

The PWDCA and the Awards Committee are excited to offer an award program for competitive PWDCA Portuguese Water Dog owners.

The program will reward PWDCA members who put working and breed titles on their dogs. The award will come in the form of a colorful PWD specially designed lapel pin. It will be given for the first title a dog earns in 7 different performance events:  Breed, Obedience, Agility, Water, Service, Tracking, and Rally.

As of February 1st of 2002 these pins are sent Free to owners for each dog earning titles starting on that date. We have records of the AKC titles so they will be mailed automatically.

How many title pins can my dog get?

Your dog will receive 1 pin for your first title in 6 different venues plus service work. Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Water, Rally, Tracking and Service. One pin per dog per discipline.

How many pins can I get?

If you are a PWDCA member or associate member each of your dogs is entitled to pins. So if you have 3 champions you will receive 3 conformation pins. Three dogs with at least a Beginner Novice Obedience title - you will receive 3 Obedience pins, one for each of the 3 different dogs.

What if I receive my first title from another registry, am I eligible to get a pin?

The registries that are accepted in the Register of Merit program (ROM) are the ones that are acceptable in the Pin Awards program. These titling stats from other registries are not kept by the pin coordinator so verification (copy of title certificate) needs to be sent. (* see below)

My dog has 3 Obedience CD's from 3 different registries, can I get 3 pins for Obedience?

No. One pin per discipline, per dog, per lifetime.

What about Service dogs?

Service pins are given to dogs who work in either Therapy, Search and Rescue or as an assistance dog. There are specific eligibility requirements for each. Find out more about the Service Dog Pin Award. It is your responsibility to fill out the required paper work and send it to the Pin Awards Coordinator.

I'm from Canada, do I get a pin for Canadian Titles?

Yes. If you are a PWDCA member and have earned your first title in Canada you are eligible to receive a pin. However the pin coordinator does not keep Canadian records so the proof of your accomplishment needs to be sent in. Include a copy of the title certificate with owners name and address. You will then receive your free pin. Remember a duplicate title from AKC will not entitle you to an additional pin.

I am a co-owner and I showed my dog but never received a pin. Why?

If you co-own a dog and are a PWDCA member but are not listed first on the AKC papers you will not receive the pin even if you were the person who put the title on the dog (except for water titles). The pins are sent to the first PWDCA member named on the dogs AKC registration papers. You will need to contact the co-owner to get your pin OR you can purchase a pin. If you wish to have the names reversed, both owner and co-owner need to contact the Pin Coordinator so that it can be switched in the pin data base.

How do I purchase a pin?

Sometimes owners lose pins, sometimes there is a co-owner on a dog who wants a pin. You are allowed to purchase one (1) replacement pin. Send the dogs name and the title you wish to acquire a replacement pin for and mail to the Pin Coordinator along with $5.50. (Make check out to PWDCA inc.)

I have an older dog who earned a title a while ago. Can he get a pin?

Yes. Dogs who earned titles before the pin program began in 2002 are eligible to receive a pin but they must be purchased. Dogs who are deceased are eligible for title pins as well. Send a copy of the title to the pin coordinator along with $5.50 and mailing information.

My dog earned his title before I was a PWDCA member, can he get an Awards Pin?

Yes. Those pins must be purchased. You will need to send a copy of the title certificate along with your name, address and $5.50 to the pin coordinator. New membership information is updated to the coordinator monthly.

I know I am supposed to get a pin but never received it. What should I do?

If you meet all of the criteria and are sure you are due a pin then contact the pin coordinator so that it can be straightened out. Sometimes AKC misses dogs. Sometimes the pin goes to the wrong owner, sometimes there is a change of address that doesn't get into the data base in time, sometimes a name is changed or not listed in the membership roster as primary PWDCA member.

I just earned my first title. How long will I have to wait?

All of the stats for AKC titles come from the AKC Awards CD which is sent out every month and lists all titles earned 2 months previous. So pins come to you approximately 2 months after title was earned. If you don't want to wait the two months, send a copy of the title certificate and mailing information and the pin coordinator will send your free pin out immediately.

PWDCA Water titles are sent out as soon as the pin coordinator receives the stats from the club secretaries.

Can I get a pin for my JWD?

No. Junior Water Dog is a certificate level not a titling level. It does not earn a pin. You will get your first Water pin when you move up to Apprentice (AWD).
