Volunteers Needed for PWDCA Rescue's New Foster Program

What happens when PWDCA Rescue is needed?  We contact the owner of the dog and the shelter listing the dog, or perhaps the owner has contacted us. If we do not know the breeder we arrange to take the dog into our possession.

But where will the dog stay? Who will pick up the dog? Who will pay for the cost of interim care?

The rescue is stuck until those questions (and others) are answered.

Normally, our Regional Club Rescue Representatives are the first point of contact in a Portuguese Water Dog rescue situation.  However, if the dog is not in an area covered by a Regional Club or, if for some reason our nearest Representative can't get to the dog, then there needs to be a Plan B. That’s where our new Foster program comes in.

PWDCA Rescue needs you to join the new Foster program! You may volunteer and never be called. But when you are called you could be:

  • Playing a vital role in the life or death of a PWD.
  • The difference in whether a frightened PWD must spend another lonely night in a shelter.
  • Helping a PWD owner out of an unfortunate situation.

Fostering a PWD rescue will be one of the most rewarding acts of kindness you could do.

Your out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed, so the only thing it will cost you is your time. PWDCA Rescue will provide you with guidance and support and make sure that you are comfortable through the entire process.

If you would like to volunteer to be a potential Foster Home, please download the Foster Home Application. You can mail it or email it to [email protected].

One of our Foster Committee Co-Chairs, Marcia Litke for the West, and Cathy Clark for the East will take it from there.

If you have any questions, please contact your Regional Club Rescue Representative or any of us in Rescue at 877-328-PWDS.

With a little time and a little love you can make the rescue of a PWD possible.

Thank you,

Bonnie Bryan
PWDCA Rescue President
